The Westfield Bulldogs defeated the Oscar Smith Tigers 34-28 in double overtime to win the Virgina 6A State Championship. The two teams matched up in the state title game last year, which saw the Bulldogs win 49-42 in triple overtime.

The Bulldogs entered the game on an eight-game winning streak, the previous seven which the close margin of victory was 17 points. Westfield surrendered a 14-point second half lead and also allowed the Tigers to score on the first play of overtime. The Bulldogs countered to tie the game at 28 at the end of the first overtime and scored in the second overtime. A missed extra point gave Westfield a 34-28 lead. Oscar Smith had four chances to score a touchdown from the 10-yard line to tie the game. A touchdown and a converted extra point would have given the team a win. The Tigers moved the ball down to the 3-yard line on their first three plays. A stop on 4th down secured the second straight title for the Bulldogs and its 4th championship since 2003.

"All those things you want out of a football team," Coach Kyle Simmons said. "I thought we were there.

It was just the third time all season that Westfield (13-2) allowed more than 21 points in a game. Offensively, it was the 10th time in the last 11 that Westfield scored at least 29 points in a contest.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs was sophomore quarterback Reham Johnson who threw for 221 yards and four touchdowns.Senior wide receiver Ivory Frimpong caught five passes for 95 yards and one touchdown while junior fullback Nolan Cockrill caught two touchdown passes.
