Devina Bawa Portfolio

Devina was awarded $50 for Best In Show: 3D Studio from the Art Faculty. Congratulations Devina your work is beautiful!

As I began my transfer of focus from drawing and painting to sculpture and pottery, I sought to test out my limits with handling clay as I experimented with many tools and techniques used for ceramics, as well as a delicate hand. It became my focus to experiment with different aesthetics; from seeing how small my spouts could get, to how long the neck could be stretched, and to how thin the walls can be compressed. Eventually, I was able to create a diverse array of cups, bowls, plates, and vessels with various curvatures, widths, and patterns.

As the process of glazing the pieces came next, it occurred to me that the art of glazing was quite similar to the art of blending colors on a painting to see which combinations would suit the piece. Not knowing the outcome of the true color or fluidity of every glaze, every process became a trial and error, and every piece coming out of the bisque fire provided for unique shades, patterns, and textures that were solely the art of the kiln’s heat and the few layers of glaze. With the vast array of blue glazes available to me, I became inspired to create an artistic approach of the ocean: a simple, yet complex theme that can portray both beauty and destruction. All together, I wish for my pieces to be envisioned as simplified versions of the majestic color palettes and textures of our Earth and sea.
