Alyssa Martinez Portfolio

The body of work I created for this show is based on the evolution of societal standards in our modern world. My goal is to demonstrate how individuals are influenced to act and how they can confidently defy traditional roles despite outside pressures. Additionally, I wanted to illustrate our behavior regarding others and our planet to emphasize the impact of our actions.

I create the work that I do because I genuinely have fun and feel relaxed while painting or drawing. Art has always played an important role in my life as it gives me the opportunity to turn my ideas into something tangible and allows me to imagine in many new ways. I find different forms of expression exciting, offering experiences that are unique to each viewer. In the future, I hope to use art to help relieve stress while creating something that is visually appealing.

To make a piece, I begin with a plan but often stray from it as I begin to work with my desired media. The changes may be small or large, but come naturally to hopefully improve the quality of the message I want to send. My favorite media is paint, specifically watercolor and acrylic because I find them easier to work with than most drawing utensils. My artwork and creative process are inspired by artists on social media platforms such as Instagram because they each have their own distinct style and constantly strive to further their skills.

I hope that when people view my work, they can relate to the emotion I am trying to express. While I would like an observer to experience the tranquility I often try to convey, I would also like them to feel the worry, stress, or confusion of my other images. Above anything else, I hope for a connection between viewers and my pieces, even if they interpret it differently than I originally wanted.
