Claire Kolman Portfolio

I would describe myself and how I approach art as a perfectionist. I constantly push myself to be better and try new techniques to improve my art. Throughout my four years in the amazing Westfield arts program I have grown exponentially as an artist and really leaned into my own style. My work is generally realistic, and I take a lot of inspiration from nature and landscapes. I love photography as well as painting and drawing, so I enjoy combining those interests when I can to paint or draw an image that I took.

For my portfolio this year, I initially struggled to come up with a concept that I could create an extended body of work about. I landed on the idea of events in 2020, such as covid, the election, chaos, the idea of hope, and how they affected people’s lives. I integrated my theme very subtly because I didn’t want it to be in your face. I started off working with acrylic paints because I felt more comfortable with them, but as I progressed through my work I expanded to use graphite and then even a little bit of colored pencil, which was more challenging for me because I haven’t used it in a finished work before. I collaged pieces of newspaper through all my pieces as a unifying element to tie them all together.
