Frequently Asked Questions:

Dr. Copeland worked with the PTSA to create the following responses to frequently asked questions.

1. Please explain block scheduling.

Block scheduling means that a course does not meet daily, instead it meets for 90 minutes every other day. This allows time for teachers to re-teach/review previous material, teach new material, and give time for students to practice new material that was taught.

2. What is Bulldog Block? How do we know if it’s an A or a B day? What can my student expect?

Bulldog Block (BDB) is a school-wide intervention and extended learning time, where all teachers are available for students. The assigned BDB teacher has the option to allow a student with a grade of an A, B, or C to leave their BDB period with a pre-approved pass from another teacher.  Students are required to obtain this pass prior to the beginning of BDB. During BDB all students will have the opportunity to watch Westfield Live. Following attendance and Westfield Live the rest of the period is for the following:

  • Remediation/Intervention
  • Extension
  • Make up work/test/quiz/lab
  • Relationship building
  • Silent Reading
  • Homework
  • Quiet study time
  • One on one or small groups with teacher

Please note: No new material is taught during Bulldog Block. Also, at some points in the year, there are class meetings or other administratively approved programs during this time.

3. What should I do if my student will be late or absent?  Is it the same procedure if I need to pick him/her up early?

Resources regarding absences, late check-ins and checkouts can be found on the Westfield website by going to the Homepage, clicking on the “Full Menu”, select “About” and click on the arrow listing the “Attendance” option.

4. What does it mean if I get a phone call / text /email that my student has been marked absent?  …especially if I know they are at school.

If a parent is getting a call that a student has been marked absent it means that the teacher determined that the student is not in class. Many teachers take attendance in the beginning of the period and have the ability to change it later. Teachers do not immediately update attendance each time a student comes into the classroom as it takes away from instruction. It is important to be in class on time so accurate attendance is taken. If a student needs to go somewhere other than their assigned class, it is best to check-in with the teacher first, then proceed to approved location.

5. What forms are required for every student? When do they need to be updated and re-submitted? Who is the contact person at WHS for my student’s forms?

Forms required of every student:

Emergency Care Form & Health Information Form

Updated/Resubmitted:

Both forms need to be submitted at the start of each school year OR if there is a change in information (health, residence)

Contact: Forms are collected by the sub schools (Emergency Care/Health – shared with Clinic)

6. Where / how can I find my student’s ID number?

Student ID number can be found when you login to SIS ParentVue under Student information. As a reminder, student id number does not change as a student moves through FCPS.

7. What do families need to know about the student laptops issued by FCPS?

With the FCPSOn initiative, over 2,500 laptops have been distributed to Westfield students.  Along with the laptops came 1 charger and 1 carrying case.  Students are expected to come to school every day with a fully charged laptop, it is not recommended that the student bring the charger to school.  It is only to be used for educational purposes.  More Information

  • The laptop is only for student use.  Family, friends, etc. should not be using the device.
  • A support fee will be charged to high school students More Information
  • Internet Content Filtering- Students will receive the same filtering at school and at home. More Information
  • Repairs- tech support is provided at the school.  Please do not take to a retail store.
  • If lost or stolen please alert school staff ASAP
    • Cost of replacement Dell 3300 ($467.00)
    • Cost of replacement power adapter ($28.00)
  • Laptops & chargers will be collected at the end of the school year.
  • Students will be reissued the same computer the following school year.

8. What is MySchoolBucks and how is it used?  Is it just for cafeteria funds?

MySchoolBucks is an ecommerce website that FCPS utilizes for three different purposes:

  1. Lunch Accounts – load money for your student to purchase meals *this is run through Food & Nutrition Services and not the individual school*
  2. School Store – Allows for credit card and e-check payment for items available within the store.  Product examples from our store include club dues, senior dues, yearbook & field trips.  All items in the store are created when the teacher/sponsor for each item requests to have it set up in the store.
  3. Class Fees – Allows for credit card and e-check payment for class fees. Any student enrolled in a class that has a course fee will be invoiced via email and that invoice will appear when you log on to MySchoolBucks until it is paid.

If a parent is new to MSB and never used it before:

  1. Go to www.MySchoolBucks.com
  2. Add your students using Westfield High School, and either their student ID or birthdate

You will receive a confirmation email that your account has been established.

9. What does the school offer in terms of Driver’s Education?  Who is the contact person?

Westfield offers Driver’s Ed in conjunction with HPE 10. It is one-quarter of the year-long course including one-quarter health and two-quarters PE.

Students should contact their HPE 10 teacher as we each take one-quarter of the year to teach our students Driver’s Ed.

  • Noel Klippenstein 1st quarter
  • Erin Turner 2nd quarter
  • Alice Andersen 3rd quarter
  • Shaun Blair 4th quarter

We also offer the Partners for Safe Teen Driving 90-minute presentation at Westfield. The first of 4 nights was Sept 24, 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium (Nov 12, 2019, Feb 11, 2020 and April 28, 2020, all 7:00 p.m. in the Westfield Auditorium). Be seated by 6:55 p.m.

All 10th graders are required to attend one (1) of these presentations with their parent/guardian for course completion. They are allowed to attend at any FCPS school during the year for free. FCPS offers over 100 of these PSTD events during the year. If they wait until after mid-May, it is no longer free and easy. They will need to register online, pay $30.00 and go at the later date they select. We encourage you to attend before that.

More information is readily available on the bulletin board near Driver’s Ed classroom N142 and Door 11 or go to the DMV website by searching “DMV now”, or go directly to https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/#/

Details are revealed during the classroom portion in google classroom, please check in with your child during driver’s ed to learn more.

10. How do we find out about athletics and student clubs and activities?

You can find helpful information for all sports at www.westfieldathletics.org.   For Clubs and Activities stop by the Student Activities Office and we can provide you with information regarding clubs and sponsors.  A club list is also located on the Westfield website https://westfieldhs.fcps.edu/student-life-activities/clubs-and-sponsors
